The drive back to the sprawling family estate was silent, heavy with unspoken accusations. Once inside, Toby was quickly sent to his room, still weeping. In the grand study, the tension between Victoria and Clara boiled over. Victoria paced the hardwood floor, her sequined dress catching the dim light of the desk lamp. Victoria gasped, dropping into her leather chair. The secret she had guarded so fiercely was out. Seven years ago, Clara had been a desperate, young woman who made the painful choice to place her newborn baby for open adoption.
