The blizzard raged outside St. Jude's Private Hospital, sleet lashing against the panoramic windows of the executive lounge. Inside, a sterile yet strangely festive atmosphere prevailed. The cold, pulsing cyan of cardiac monitors contrasted with the warm amber glow of a tiny Christmas tree on the polished Carrara marble counter. Wet coffee cups and unpaid chemotherapy bills lay scattered amongst the gleaming chrome. Arthur, a 34-year-old waitress, stood behind the counter, her exhaustion a palpable weight. Dark circles shadowed her eyes, her lips were chapped, and her hands trembled as she wiped down the counter, a faded hospital bracelet on her wrist – a constant reminder of her sick daughter.

Suddenly, the air thickened with arrogance. Julian Vance, a 38-year-old hedge fund heir, swaggered in. His slicked-back hair, expensive coat, and diamond pinky ring screamed privilege. He slid onto a stool, a smug, cruel smirk playing on his lips. He leaned forward, slamming his gold signet ring on the counter. The sharp clatter cut through the quiet hum of the hospital. "You smell like grease and failure," he spat, his voice dripping with venom. "Clean this mess before I get you fired on Christmas Eve!" Arthur froze, her lower lip trembling, unable to utter a word. Beside Julian, an older man, General Davis, sat in quiet solitude, his weathered brow furrowed in silent observation.

Julian, emboldened by Arthur's stunned silence, escalated his cruelty. With a flick of his wrist, he sent a crumpled five-dollar bill hurtling towards her face. The paper stung her cheek before fluttering into a spilled coffee puddle. Arthur flinched, her hands instinctively clutching her stained apron as tears welled. Julian stepped closer, jabbing a finger towards her chest. "Consider that your bonus, beggar," he sneered, his laughter cold and sadistic. "Go beg for scraps somewhere else!" Arthur's throat tightened, a lump forming as her eyes widened in helpless anguish. The General’s calloused hand tightened its grip on the counter’s edge.
