Secrets in the Gold

Charlotte’s face twisted in disbelief and panic.

"Grandfather, that’s impossible!"
she sputtered, trying to grab the necklace.
"She’s a thief! She probably bought it at a pawn shop or stole it from our family estate years ago. Don't let her manipulate you!"

But Thomas ignored his granddaughter, his gaze locked onto Emily. The young waitress was sobbing, her shoulders shaking under her cheap catering vest. Thomas gently took her by the hand, leading her away from the whispering crowd into his private study, with Charlotte trailing closely behind, fuming with anger.

Inside the quiet room, Thomas placed the necklace on the mahogany desk.

"Where did you get this, child?"
he asked, his voice unexpectedly soft.
"And who was your mother?"

Emily wiped her tears and took a deep breath.

"My mother was Sarah Vance,"
she whispered.
"She passed away six months ago from a long illness. Before she died, she gave me this necklace. She told me it was the only thing she had left of her real family. She said she was adopted, but she always dreamed of finding where she belonged. I took this catering job tonight just to see this house... to see if the rumors she heard were true."

Thomas sank into his leather chair, his hands shaking. Sarah was the name of his eldest daughter, who had gone missing over twenty-five years ago after a bitter family dispute. Everyone had assumed she had perished or started a life completely cut off from the Beaumont fortune. Charlotte, realizing the implications of Emily's words, stepped forward defensively.

"This is a scam!"
she shrieked.
"She researched our family! She's trying to steal my inheritance!"

But Thomas was looking at Emily's eyes—they were the exact shade of emerald green as his late wife's.

"We are going to do a DNA test,"
Thomas declared firmly, his eyes shining with a mixture of hope and sorrow.
"And until the results come back, Emily is staying here as my guest."
