Previously: When Vanessa accused a young girl in a denim jacket of stealing a priceless ring, manager Richard stepped in. But one look at the jewelry changed his life forever.

A Ghost from the Past

Vanessa took Richard's stunned silence as confirmation of her victory. "I told you!" she exclaimed triumphantly. "That is my family's heirloom sapphire ring. I must have dropped it in the cafe next door, and this street girl picked it up. Call the police immediately, Richard!"

But Richard didn't call the police. He couldn't take his eyes off the ring. He knew every curve of the platinum band, every facet of the rare sapphire. It was the "Midnight Star," a custom masterpiece designed by his own grandfather nearly fifty years ago. There was only one such ring in existence, and it had been given to his younger sister, Sarah, before she tragically vanished from the family's life twenty years ago after a bitter falling out with their father.

Richard turned his gaze from the ring to Zoe. He looked past the tears and the worn denim jacket, studying her facial features. He saw the high cheekbones, the slight cleft in her chin, and most of all, the striking, deep green eyes. They were the exact eyes of his long-lost sister. "Where did you get this ring, young lady?" Richard asked, his voice cracking with emotion.

"My mother gave it to me," Zoe whispered, wiping her eyes. "Her name was Sarah. She passed away last month. Before she died, she told me to bring this ring to Vanderbilt's. She said if I ever found myself in trouble, I should show it to the manager. She said... she said her brother would know what it meant."

Vanessa's face flushed with anger. "What absolute rubbish! She is making up a sob story to get out of going to jail! Richard, are you seriously listening to this garbage? I am your fiancée, and I demand you return my ring!"
