The Reunion

The rain was relentless, a drumming symphony against the grimy glass skylight of the dockside tavern. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of stale alcohol and the low murmur of hushed conversations, a stark contrast to the tempest raging outside. Carter Ross, leaning against the bar, smirked as he watched a sputtering yellow taxi pull up to the curb. His blonde hair, slicked back perfectly, gleamed under the dim tavern lights. He clutched a tumbler of amber bourbon, the ice clinking softly. Carter, ever the picture of arrogant success in his tailored charcoal blazer and gleaming gold Rolex, surveyed the scene with disdain. He took a slow sip, his eyes fixed on the taxi’s passenger door. Ten years. Ten years since he’d last seen Clara Vance. And this was her grand entrance? A dented cab, a symbol of everything he believed she’d become: a failure.

"Ten years later and Clara still arrives in a rattling taxi smelling of cheap despair!"

His voice, dripping with condescension, carried even over the rain. He laughed, a harsh, grating sound. Meanwhile, Clara Vance stepped out of the taxi. Her raven hair, usually immaculate, was plastered to her pale face by the downpour. She was dressed in a utilitarian midnight-navy trench coat, her posture unyielding, dignified. She paid the driver, her movements economical and precise, before turning towards the tavern. Her expression was unreadable, her gaze fixed on the entrance. The cold, maritime wind whipped around her, but she seemed impervious, a statue carved from ice.

As Clara pushed open the heavy tavern door, the warm, amber glow spilled out, momentarily pushing back the oppressive navy of the night. Carter, energized by his own cruelty, stepped forward, invading her space. He swirled his bourbon, the liquid catching the light. His cruel grin widened as he leaned down, his voice a low sneer.

"Did you have to skip meals just to afford the reunion cover charge, loser?"

Clara remained silent, her jaw set like carved marble. Her chin lifted, meeting his gaze without flinching. The damp wind billowed through the open door behind her, ruffling her severe bun, but she stood firm. Carter’s smirk faltered slightly at her unwavering composure, but he pressed on, enjoying the power play. He expected tears, or a stammered excuse. He got only silence, a silence that spoke volumes, a silence that was beginning to unnerve him.
