The Gala Was Supposed to Be a Celebration of New Beginnings

Maison Laurent's private VIP fitting salon glowed like a jewel box, and from where I stood, I could see everything that mattered to me reflected in its gilded mirrors.

My granddaughter Daisy, all eight years of her, stood in a delicate ivory lace dress with a frayed satin sash that she'd refused to let anyone replace. It was her mother's dress, the one my late daughter had worn at her own flower girl ceremony decades ago.

I had promised to keep Daisy safe. I had promised her dying parents that she would never know a day of fear or loneliness again.

But tonight, the woman I was about to welcome into our family was making that promise feel like a lie.

Camilla glided toward us in a ruby-red velvet gown that hugged every curve, especially the rounded swell of her belly that she'd been parading around like a trophy for the past six months.

She was supposed to be the mother of my future grandchild. She was supposed to be the one who would finally bring a new generation of Pendelton blood into the world.

Instead, she was sneering down at my little girl as if Daisy were nothing more than a stain on the marble floor.

"Don't touch my gown with your sticky hands, you pathetic orphan!" Camilla's shrill voice cut through the soft music, and she swatted Daisy's hand away with her diamond-encrusted clutch.

"Once your grandfather signs the family trust over to my unborn baby tonight, you're going to a boarding school!" she added, her red lips curling in triumph.

Daisy froze, her tiny fingers hovering in the air where they'd been slapped. She didn't cry out, didn't make a sound. But I saw the glisten of tears pooling on her lower eyelids, and something inside me cracked.

My son Lawrence stood beside Camilla, his hands trembling at his sides, saying nothing. He'd always been spineless, but this — this was beyond anything I'd ever witnessed.

I opened my mouth to intervene, to put that woman in her place right then and there, but Daisy beat me to it.

She tugged gently on my tailored sleeve, and I bent down to hear her whisper, her tiny voice shaking but clear as a bell.

"Grandpa... her tummy is a pillow. I saw another sponge belly with black straps hanging in her coat bag in the closet!"

My heart stopped. I looked up at Camilla, and her arrogant smirk had frozen into sheet-white panic.

She knew. She knew the child had seen the truth.

I strode toward the mahogany wardrobe that sat against the back wall, ignoring Camilla's frantic protests and Lawrence's stammering pleas. I wrenched open the door, and there it was — a flesh-toned silicone foam pregnancy bump, complete with dangling black Velcro straps.

I held it up under the chandelier light, my hands shaking with rage.

"Look at this hollow silicone strap—you faked an heir to rob my bloodline and abused this innocent child in my own hall!"

Camilla clutched her flattened gown, her eyes wide with terror. Lawrence just stood there, gaping like a fish.

Daisy watched from behind my leg, her tears now dry, her small hand gripping my trousers as if I were the only safe harbor in the storm.

And then the bouncer, Derrick, stepped forward, his shaved head gleaming under the lights.

"Out of the way, sir—she ordered me to clear you and the kid out of the VIP lounge!"

He lunged, but I was faster. I intercepted his wrist mid-air, drove a forearm into his chest, and dropped him onto the carpet like a sack of potatoes.

I turned back to Camilla and Lawrence, my voice like thunder.

"Security, throw this con artist and my spineless son into the street—every trust fund, villa, and share is stripped from your names tonight!"

Camilla collapsed to her knees, wailing. Lawrence followed, his face crumpled in disbelief.

But I didn't care. I wrapped my arm around Daisy's shoulders and pulled her close, her cheek resting against my lapel.

"You're safe now," I whispered. "You're always safe with me."

But even as I said it, I knew this night wasn't over. There were questions I needed answers to, and a truth darker than a fake pregnancy bump lurking beneath the surface.

Her Fury Was Just a Mask for Something Far More Dangerous

The security guards hauled Camilla and Lawrence out of the salon, their protests echoing down the marble corridor until the doors slammed shut behind them.

I expected to feel relief. I expected to feel the weight of the betrayal lift from my shoulders.

But as I stood there in the silence, Daisy's hand still clutching mine, I felt only a cold, creeping dread.

Camilla had planned this for months. She'd worn that prosthetic bump to every family dinner, every public appearance, every press photo. She'd convinced me, my son, and the entire world that she was carrying the next Pendelton heir.

And the only reason she'd been caught was an eight-year-old girl who'd been snooping in a closet.

That meant there was more. There had to be more.

I pulled out my phone and called my lawyer, a man named Edward Crane who had managed the Pendelton family fortune for over three decades.

"Edward," I said, my voice low and steady. "I need you to freeze every asset in Camilla's name. Every account, every property, every trust fund. And I need you to find out who she's been talking to."

There was a pause on the other end of the line. "Arthur, I was going to call you tomorrow. There's something you need to see."

"What is it?"

"I can't discuss it over the phone," he said. "But it's about the trust. And it's not good."

I hung up, my jaw tight. Daisy looked up at me with her big, knowing eyes.

"Grandpa, is everything okay?" she asked.

I forced a smile. "Everything's going to be fine, sweetheart. I promise."

But even as I said it, I knew that promise was about to be tested in ways I couldn't have imagined.

Later that night, after Daisy was tucked into bed, I sat alone in my study, staring at the fake pregnancy bump that now sat on my desk like a grotesque trophy.

The phone rang. It was Edward.

"Arthur, you need to come to the office immediately," he said, his voice tight. "I've found something. Something that involves your son, Camilla, and a foreign defense contractor."

I grabbed my coat. The night was far from over.
