The Documents on Edward's Desk Told a Story Far Darker Than a Fake Pregnancy

Edward's office was a fortress of mahogany and leather, but tonight it felt like a tomb.

He slid a manila folder across the desk toward me, his face pale. "I started digging into Camilla's financials the moment you called. She's been moving money into a shell company based in the Cayman Islands."

I opened the folder and stared at the bank statements. "How much?"

"Over twelve million in the past four months," Edward said. "But that's not the worst part."

He pulled out a second folder, this one marked with a red "CONFIDENTIAL" stamp. Inside were emails, encrypted messages, and what looked like schematics for a military-grade drone system.

"She's been selling your company's defense secrets to a foreign rival," Edward said. "Using your son as a courier. Lawrence thought he was delivering legal contracts, but the documents were classified."

I felt the room spin. My son — my own flesh and blood — had been manipulated into committing treason.

"Where is she now?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

"She's been taken into federal custody," Edward said. "But Lawrence is still out there. He's been calling my office all night, begging to talk to you."

I shook my head. "I don't want to see him."

"Arthur, you need to hear what he has to say. He claims he didn't know about the espionage. He says Camilla told him the documents were just contracts for a new business venture."

"And you believe him?"

Edward hesitated. "I believe he's a fool. But I don't believe he's a traitor."

I closed my eyes, trying to process everything. My son was a fool, a spineless puppet who'd let a gold-digger pull his strings. But the idea of him willingly selling out his own family's legacy was too much to bear.

"Get him here," I said finally. "I want to look him in the eye and hear it from his own mouth."

Thirty minutes later, Lawrence stood in Edward's office, his ivory silk dinner jacket now rumpled and stained, his hands shaking worse than ever.

"Dad, I swear I didn't know," he said, his voice cracking. "Camilla said she had a business partner who needed help with paperwork. She said it was just legal documents, nothing more."

"You signed away classified defense secrets!" I roared, my fists slamming onto the desk. "Do you have any idea what you've done?"

"I didn't know!" he insisted. "I trusted her!"

"You trusted a woman who strapped a pillow to her stomach to steal your inheritance!" I shouted. "You trusted her over your own family, over your own daughter!"

Lawrence flinched at the mention of Daisy. "I know. I failed her. I failed you. I failed everyone."

"You're lucky you're not in handcuffs right now," I said. "The only reason I'm not calling the authorities is because you're still my son. But that doesn't mean you're forgiven."

I turned to Edward. "What happens now?"

"The federal agents want to question Lawrence," Edward said. "But given that he was a pawn, not a mastermind, they're willing to offer immunity in exchange for full cooperation against Camilla's network."

"Do it," I said. "I want her to rot."

Lawrence nodded, tears streaming down his face. "I'll do whatever it takes to make this right."

"You'll do more than that," I said. "You'll spend the rest of your life proving you can be trusted again. Starting tonight."

But even as the words left my mouth, I knew this wasn't the end. Camilla had been caught, but the damage she'd done was already spreading.

I needed to protect Daisy. I needed to protect the family legacy. And I needed to make sure that no one ever threatened my granddaughter again.

A Voice From the Past Brought a Secret That Changed Everything

The next morning, I was in my study when I received an unexpected visitor.

Her name was Margaret Chen, and she'd been Camilla's cellmate during a brief stint in county jail five years ago. She was a small, weathered woman with sharp eyes, and she claimed to have information that could "blow the lid off everything."

"You're Arthur Pendelton," she said, sitting across from me with a cup of tea cradled in her hands. "I've heard a lot about you."

"I've heard nothing about you," I replied. "Why are you here?"

"Because I know Camilla better than anyone," she said. "And I know she's not working alone."

I leaned forward. "What do you mean?"

"She had a partner," Margaret said. "A man she called 'The Handler.' He was the one who orchestrated the whole scheme — the fake pregnancy, the trust fund, the espionage. She was just the face. He's the one pulling the strings."

"Who is he?"

"I don't know his real name," she said. "But I do know this: he's someone close to your family. Someone you trust."

My blood ran cold. "That's impossible."

"Is it?" Margaret said, setting down her tea. "Think about it. Who knew about the trust? Who knew about the classified documents? Who had access to your house, your office, your schedule?"

I thought about it. The list was short. Edward. My housekeeper. And... my brother, Richard.

No. It couldn't be Richard. He'd been by my side since we were children. He was the only family I had left besides Daisy and Lawrence.

But even as I dismissed the thought, a memory surfaced. Richard had been acting strange lately. Distant. Nervous. And he'd been unusually interested in the defense contracts.

I pulled out my phone and called Edward. "I need a full background check on my brother. Everything — financials, communications, travel records."

"Arthur, are you sure?"

"Just do it," I said. "And do it quietly."

I hung up and looked at Margaret. "If you're lying to me..."

"I'm not," she said. "Camilla told me everything. She thought she was untouchable. She thought she'd get away with it."

"But she didn't," I said. "And neither will her handler."

That night, I sat in my study with the fake pregnancy bump still on my desk, a constant reminder of the deception that had nearly destroyed my family.

Daisy came in wearing her pajamas, her curly hair a mess. "Grandpa, I can't sleep."

I opened my arms, and she climbed into my lap. "What's wrong, sweetheart?"

"I'm scared Camilla will come back," she whispered.

"She won't," I said, holding her tight. "I promise you, she'll never hurt you again."

"But what if someone else tries?"

I kissed the top of her head. "Then I'll stop them. No matter what it takes."

As I held her, I made a silent vow. Whoever the Handler was, whatever they wanted, they were going to find out that Arthur Pendelton was not a man to be crossed.

And they were going to regret the day they ever targeted my granddaughter.
