Previously: When 18-year-old Chloe stepped onto a stranger's motorcycle outside her school, she thought she was running away. She didn't realize she was actually riding straight toward the truth of her past.

The Shadows of the Past

As Chloe approached the motorcycle, a sharp screech of tires echoed across the school parking lot. A sleek, black luxury SUV tore around the corner, fishtailing on the patches of black ice before slamming to a halt just yards away from the bikers. The door flung open, and Richard, Chloe's stepfather, stepped out. His face was twisted in a mask of pure rage, his expensive wool coat flapping in the freezing wind.

"Chloe! Get away from those degenerates right now!" Richard roared, marching toward them. "You are coming home with me. We have legal matters to settle, and I will not let you ruin this family's reputation!"

Chloe shrank back, the familiar grip of fear tightening around her throat. Richard had spent the last five years controlling every aspect of her life since her mother's passing. He had convinced everyone that he was her benevolent guardian, but Chloe knew the truth. On her eighteenth birthday, her biological father's trust fund was set to transfer to her. Richard had spent weeks threatening her, demanding she sign over the rights to the estate, or face being thrown out onto the streets with nothing.

Before Richard could reach her, Marcus stepped off his bike, his tall frame instantly cutting off the stepfather's path. The other riders quietly dismounted, forming a silent, protective wall behind Marcus. The tension in the air was thick enough to shatter like ice.

"She isn't going anywhere with you, Richard," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a dangerously low, calm register. "Her father made me her legal guardian in the event of her mother's passing. We've been waiting for this day."

Richard sneered, though he took a cautious step back. "You're nothing but a gang of criminals! The courts will never hand a young girl over to a bunch of lawless bikers. I have the papers right here!" He pulled a document from his coat pocket, waving it triumphantly. But Marcus merely smiled, a cold, knowing expression that made Richard's bravado falter.
