Justice Served

The shattered syringe lay on the floor, a testament to Dubois’s capitulation. Armand Dubois, his face pale and clammy, slowly backed away, his eyes wide with a mixture of fear and impotent rage. He stammered, “I… I didn’t know… the paperwork…” Silas ignored him, his gaze fixed on Rex, who now stood shakily, the wire muzzle still in place but the oppressive restraint gone. Silas knelt, his prosthetic leg clicking softly, and gently unlatched the muzzle, his calloused fingers brushing against Rex’s scarred muzzle. Rex licked his hand, a low rumble of affection in his chest. Silas produced a small, official-looking ID tag from his uniform pocket, a military canine identification, and clipped it to Rex’s collar. “Sergeant Major Rex, United States Army, retired,” he announced, his voice resonating with authority, loud enough for everyone in the courtroom to hear. “Under the provisions of the K9 Military Service Act, he is entitled to full veteran’s benefits and protection.” He then turned to the stunned judge and jury. “This man,” Silas gestured towards Dubois, “will face a full investigation for attempted execution of a decorated military officer and obstruction of justice. I will personally ensure it.” The judge, visibly shaken but regaining composure, nodded curtly. “Court adjourned. The charges against the animal are dismissed. Officer Vance, you will escort Sergeant Major Rex from the premises. Mr. Dubois, you will remain here for questioning.” Silas stood, offering a hand to Rex, who nudged his side gratefully. As they walked towards the exit, the courtroom erupted in a wave of applause and cheers. Rex, no longer a condemned beast but a hero rightfully recognized, walked tall beside his handler, his tail held high. The battle was won, not with bullets, but with truth, courage, and the unwavering bond between a soldier and his loyal companion. The takeaway was clear: true service and sacrifice deserve respect, no matter the form it takes.
