The Library's Hidden Panel Swings Open

Sebastian didn't hesitate. He scooped Lily into his arms, ignoring the ache in his back, and strode toward the door. Madeline followed, her hand on his shoulder. Marcus's smug laughter echoed behind them, but they didn't stop.

The Cole Manor library was a cavern of mahogany and leather, with shelves that stretched to the ceiling. Lily's eyes scanned the walls, her heart pounding. Third oak panel, third oak panel. She counted the panels as Sebastian carried her past rows of dusty books.

"There," she said, pointing to a panel that looked slightly darker than the rest.

Sebastian set her down gently, pressing his palm against the wood. It gave way with a soft click, revealing a hidden compartment. Inside lay a small brass key, tarnished with age, and a faded photograph.

Madeline picked up the photo, her hands trembling. It showed a young woman — Lily's mother — holding a baby, and standing beside her was a man with Sebastian's piercing blue eyes. But it wasn't Sebastian. The man was older, with the same sharp jaw as Marcus.

"That's our father," Sebastian whispered. "Our father, not Marcus."

Lily looked up at him, confused. "But the letter said Marcus was my father."

"It's a lie," Madeline said, her voice firm. She studied the photo. "Look at the date on the back. This was taken two years before you were born. Your mother was with our father, not Marcus."

Sebastian's jaw tightened. "Marcus must have known about this photograph. He must have manipulated everything to make you believe he was your father, to keep you from claiming the inheritance."

Lily took the key from the compartment. It was warm in her hand, as if it had been waiting for her. She looked up at Sebastian. "What does it open?"

Madeline pointed to a small iron safe in the corner of the library, half-hidden behind a globe. "That's been there for years. No one could open it."

Lily limped toward the safe, her brace clinking on the floor. She inserted the key, and with a soft turn, the lock clicked. Inside was a single document, sealed with the Cole family crest.

Sebastian opened it, his eyes scanning the words. His face went white. "It's a birth certificate," he breathed. "For Lily Cole, daughter of Sebastian Cole and Evelyn Hart. Dated the day she was born."

Madeline sobbed, clutching Lily to her chest. "She's yours. She's really yours."

But the sound of footsteps echoed from the hallway. Marcus burst into the library, his face contorted with rage. "You think you've won?" he snarled. "That paper is worthless. The will still names me as heir if there's any doubt."

Sebastian stood, shielding Lily. "There's no doubt, Marcus. She's my daughter. And I have the proof."

Marcus lunged, but the security officers were already there, seizing him by the arms. He struggled, screaming obscenities, but they dragged him out of the library, his cries fading into the distance.

The silence that followed was heavy, but it was broken by the sound of Lily's soft laughter. She looked up at Sebastian and Madeline, her eyes shining. "I have a family," she said.

Madeline knelt, brushing a tear from Lily's cheek. "You always did, sweetheart. We just didn't know it."

Sebastian wrapped his arms around both of them, and for a long moment, they stood there, holding each other. The golden light of the setting sun streamed through the library windows, casting long shadows that slowly faded into dusk.

Later that night, as Lily lay in a new bed, in a new room, she clutched the silver pocket watch to her chest. The ruby latch was cold, but she didn't press it. She didn't need to anymore. The truth had been unlocked, and it had set her free.

She heard footsteps in the hallway, and Sebastian appeared in the doorway, his silhouette soft against the moonlight. "Can't sleep?" he asked.

Lily shook her head. "I keep thinking about my mother," she said. "She knew. She knew you would find me."

Sebastian sat on the edge of the bed, taking her hand. "I wish I had been there sooner. I would have moved mountains to bring you home."

Lily smiled. "You did."

He kissed her forehead. "Get some rest, my little miracle. Tomorrow, we start fresh."

As he closed the door, Lily looked out the window at the stars. She had a family now, a real family. And she had the watch that had led her home.

The truth had not only set her free — it had given her a future brighter than any ruby.
