Previously: When Rachel slammed down that forged DNA test, she thought she'd won. But she never knew what was sealed inside the hollow chess king—a truth that would shatter her world.

The Final Move: What Rachel Had Set in Motion

I stared at the text for a long time, the words burning into my retinas. Rachel was in jail, but she had planned for this. She had always been one step ahead.

Victor drove us back to the estate in silence, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. Mila fell asleep in the back seat, exhausted from the emotional rollercoaster.

"She's not going to stop," I said, breaking the silence. "She'll fight from inside. She'll find a way."

Victor's jaw tightened. "She can't touch you now. The will is clear. Mila is the sole heir. I'll make sure no one takes that from her."

But as we pulled into the estate's gates, something was wrong. The security guard was missing. The main door was ajar.

"Stay here," Victor ordered, his voice sharp.

I grabbed his arm. "No. We stick together."

We walked inside, Mila still asleep in my arms. The conservatory was wrecked—papers scattered, orchids smashed, furniture overturned.

"What happened here?" I breathed.

Victor went to the desk and picked up a note, written in Rachel's neat script. "You took everything from me. So I'm taking what you love most."

I felt the world stop. "Mila."

I looked down at my arms, but they were empty.

"Mila!" I screamed, my voice echoing through the silent house.

Victor ran to the security monitors, but the feeds were dark. "She's been taken," he said, his face pale. "Rachel must have had an accomplice on the inside."

I fell to my knees, the same spot where I had knelt hours before, feeling the cold marble against my skin. My daughter was gone.

"We'll find her," Victor said, pulling me to my feet. "I promise you, we will find her."

But as I looked around at the destruction, I knew Rachel had played her final card. She had sacrificed everything to hurt me, and she had succeeded.

Days turned into weeks. The police searched, but there was no sign of Mila or the accomplice. I barely slept, barely ate, barely breathed.

Then, one night, my phone rang. An unknown number.

"Elena," a voice said, and I froze. It was Rachel.

"Where is my daughter?" I demanded, my voice shaking.

"She's safe," Rachel said, her tone eerily calm. "For now. But if you want to see her again, you'll do exactly what I say."

"What do you want?"

"I want the will. The original. Burn it, and I'll tell you where Mila is."

I looked at Victor, who was listening on speaker. He shook his head, mouthing, "We can't trust her."

"You have until midnight," Rachel said. "Then I'll make sure you never see her again."

The line went dead.

Victor placed his hands on my shoulders. "We'll get her. I have a plan."

He explained that Rachel's accomplice was a former employee, a man who had been fired for embezzlement. His phone records showed a location—a cabin in the mountains, hours away.

"The police are on their way," Victor said. "But we need to go now."

We drove through the night, the headlights cutting through the darkness. My heart was pounding so hard I could barely breathe.

When we reached the cabin, the police were already there, surrounding the building. Mila was inside, unharmed, huddled in a corner with a blanket wrapped around her.

"Mama!" she cried, running into my arms.

I held her so tight I thought I might break her. "I've got you, baby. I've got you."

Rachel was arrested again, this time for kidnapping. She would spend a long time in prison.

But as we drove home, Mila safe in my lap, Victor turned to me with a strange expression.

"There's something you need to know," he said. "Rachel wasn't working alone. She had a partner. Someone who wanted you to lose everything."

"Who?" I asked, already dreading the answer.

He handed me another letter, this one sealed with the Kensington crest. "This was in the cabin. Rachel left it before the police arrived."

I opened it, and my heart stopped. The letter was from Lucas—my dead husband.

"Elena, if you're reading this, then Rachel has done exactly what I predicted. She told you she had a partner. She lied. The partner was me. I set this all in motion before I died, to protect you and Mila. I knew she would try to take everything. I needed you to have proof. I needed you to win. But I also need you to know: I loved you both more than anything in this world. Forgive me for the lies. They were the only way to save you."

Tears streamed down my face. He had planned everything, even from beyond the grave. The chess king, the hidden will, the fake partner—all part of a master plan to protect his family.

I looked at Mila, who was already asleep in my arms, and I knew we were finally safe.

"Let's go home," I said, and Victor smiled.

In the end, Rachel's greed had destroyed her, but our love had survived. And that was the greatest victory of all.
