Previously: Hiding in a dark, rain-soaked junkyard with her young daughter, Melissa realizes the police officers hunting them aren't trying to rescue them—they are working for her own husband.

A Treacherous Trap

As the flashlight beams drifted toward the far end of the junkyard, Melissa whispered into Bella’s ear, her voice barely a breath. "When I say run, you head for the small gap in the wooden fence. Don't look back, sweetheart. Just run to the diner down the street." Bella nodded, tears streaming down her pale cheeks, mixing with the rain. Melissa wiped them away with a muddy thumb, her heart breaking. She couldn't let Richard win. He had spent years gaslighting her, making her feel small, but threatening their daughter was the final straw.

Melissa stood up slowly, her knees shaking. But as she took a step, her foot slipped on a slick patch of oil. A heavy piece of iron piping clattered loudly against a wheel rim. The sound echoed like a gunshot through the quiet yard.

"Over there! Movement by the blue sedan!"

shouted the second officer. The flashlights whipped back instantly, pinning Melissa in their blinding glare. Bella shrieked as a hand grabbed her yellow hood. It was Officer Miller, his face twisted in a cold, triumphant sneer. Melissa didn't hesitate. Fueled by pure maternal instinct, she grabbed a heavy rusted wrench from the ground and swung it with all her might, striking the officer’s arm. He groaned, releasing Bella.

"Run, Bella! Run!"

Melissa screamed, stepping between her daughter and the advancing officers. But as Bella scrambled toward the fence, the headlights of a massive black SUV suddenly illuminated the entire yard, blinding them all. The engine roared to a halt, and the door swung open. Out stepped Richard, immaculate in his designer trench coat, completely untouched by the rain. He looked at Melissa not with love, but with cold, calculating malice. "Did you really think you could escape me, Melissa?" he sneered, stepping into the mud. "You have nowhere left to go."
