Previously: Clara and her daughter Maya are running for their lives from the very people sworn to protect them, uncovering a dark family secret that reaches the highest levels of power.

The Trap Closes In

Clara knew they couldn't stay behind the rusted wheel well forever. The flashlight beams were drawing closer, bouncing off shattered windshields and wet chrome. Whispering a silent reassurance into Maya's ear, Clara gestured toward the dark skeleton of an old warehouse at the edge of the property. Moving with agonizing slowness, she guided her daughter through the shadows, keeping low to the ground. Every squelch of mud beneath her boots felt deafeningly loud.

They slipped through a rusted gap in the warehouse siding, seeking shelter in the pitch-black interior. But as Clara leaned against a stack of wooden pallets to catch her breath, a bright beam of light suddenly illuminated the space, blinding her. She gasped, pushing Maya behind her back as a silhouette stepped into the doorway.

"It's over, Clara. There's nowhere left to run," Officer Vance said, stepping forward with his service weapon drawn.

Clara's heart hammered against her ribs. "Why are you doing this, Vance? You know what Marcus did! You know he's the one who should be in handcuffs!" she cried, her voice trembling but fierce.

Vance let out a cold, humorless laugh. "Marcus is the police chief, Clara. He owns this town, and he owns this department. He wants his daughter back, and he wants you silenced. He told us you're unstable and kidnapped Maya. Who do you think the judge is going to believe?"

The betrayal stung deeper than the physical pain in her temple. Her own husband, a man sworn to uphold the law, had turned the entire police force against her to cover up his financial crimes and keep her from exposing him. Clara reached into her pocket, her fingers brushing against the small digital voice recorder she had slipped inside before fleeing their home. It was still recording.
