The Reunion Rumble

The grand, historic courtroom buzzed with the energy of a high school reunion, a stark contrast to its usual solemnity. Mahogany wainscoting gleamed under dramatic chiaroscuro lighting, reflecting off polished brass railings and the faces of hundreds of spectators. Outside, rain lashed against stained-glass windows, the flashing red and blue of police strobes dancing across the floorboards. Amidst the hushed legal gossip, Jason Vance, a smug 32-year-old hedge fund heir with a cruel smirk and a bespoke suit, stood by the defense table. Ten paces away, Jack Mercer, a quiet, stoic man with piercing blue eyes and a faded scar, radiated an unbothered stillness in his damp trench coat.

A low-angle tracking shot pushed in on Jason as he gestured dismissively towards a yellow taxi idling outside. He threw his head back in arrogant laughter.

“Ten years later, Jack, and you still roll up to our reunion in a thirty-dollar cab?”
he sneered, his lip curling. Jack remained silent, his mouth firmly closed, calmly unbuttoning his cuffs, his eyes cold and unblinking.

Jason stepped closer, leaning over the brass railing, his eyes dripping with cruel entitlement.

“Some of us built billionaire empires, Jack, while you stayed an irrelevant, broke nobody.”
he patronized. Jack’s jaw clenched, his stillness absolute, as the distant thud of helicopter rotors rattled the glass.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the courtroom entrance violently slammed open. Four towering Secret Service agents in black suits stormed in, clearing the aisle under blinding strobe flashes.

“Clear the aisle! Presidential Escort Protocol Alpha in effect!”
the lead agent boomed with shattering authority. Jason’s mocking grin froze, his pupils dilating in paralyzed shock.

Two four-star generals and a senior presidential aide marched down the aisle, snapping salutes beside Jack before presenting a gold-embossed binder.

“Director Mercer, the President requires your immediate command at the White House,”
the aide said urgently. Jason’s color drained, his breath hitching in disbelief.

An extreme close-up captured cold sweat beading on Jason’s forehead. His jaw dropped, chin quivering.

“D-Director Mercer… Director of National Intelligence?”
he stammered, his eyes welling with tears as the courtroom gasped. Jack stood over him, an icy, immovable supremacy radiating from his silent form.

Finally, a low-angle shot pushed in on a two-shot as Jack calmly slid off his trench coat, revealing a presidential intelligence badge. He leaned down.

“The taxi was for your convenience, Jason—so you wouldn’t hear my federal warrant coming for you,”
Jack stated with lethal composure. As two agents cuffed a trembling Jason, his eyes widened in paralyzed terror.
