Previously: When Daniel returned home during a massive storm, he found his terrified six-year-old son Caleb locked outside on the patio, leading to a devastating discovery upstairs.

The Depth of Betrayal

The silence in the bedroom was suffocating, broken only by the sound of Caleb's soft whimpering from behind Daniel's leather jacket. Vanessa’s face drained of color as she stared at her dripping-wet husband and her shivering son. The man beside her, a wealthy local contractor named Julian whom Daniel had trusted to renovate their kitchen, looked panicked, desperately trying to pull on his shirt.

"Daniel, it’s not what it looks like," Vanessa stammered, her voice trembling as she tried to pull the duvet over her shoulders. "We were just... we didn't know he was outside."
"He was wearing his costume, Vanessa! He wanted to show you his toy!" Daniel shouted, his eyes burning with tears of betrayal. "You locked the back door so you wouldn't be disturbed. You locked your own son out in a thunderstorm!"

Daniel carried Caleb down to the kitchen, leaving the treacherous scene behind. He wrapped his son in dry blankets and held a warm mug of cocoa to the boy's lips. Caleb’s breathing finally slowed, but his eyes remained wide with fear. A few minutes later, Vanessa walked down the stairs, now fully dressed, her expression shifting from fear to cold defiance. Julian had already slipped out the front door.

"We need to talk," Vanessa said coldly, crossing her arms. "This marriage has been over for months, Daniel. You're never home. You're always working."
"I work seventy hours a week to pay for this house!" Daniel spat back. "But that doesn't excuse abandoning our son. You put his life in danger tonight."

Vanessa scoffed, refusing to take responsibility. "He's fine, Daniel. Stop being dramatic. If you want a divorce, fine. But don't think you're taking Caleb. I'm his mother, and any judge will give me custody." That threat hung in the air like a poisonous fog. Daniel realized he wasn't just fighting for his marriage anymore; he was fighting for his son's survival.
