Previously: My sister-in-law Rachel forged a DNA test to steal my daughter's inheritance. But she didn't know the real proof was hidden inside the antique chess king my husband left me.

The War Rachel Promised

Two days later, I sat in the same suite, but the atmosphere had shifted. The gilded crown molding seemed less oppressive, the velvet armchairs more forgiving. Mila was at home with my mother, safe for now.

Judge Sterling had called me back, her voice urgent on the phone. "There's something you need to see, Elena. Something that changes everything."

I arrived to find her standing by the window, holding a thick manila envelope. Her face was grim. "This was found in Rachel's safe deposit box," she said, handing it to me.

Inside were photographs — pictures of Rachel meeting with a man in a dark suit, passing envelopes, shaking hands. And then I saw it: a copy of my husband's original will, dated three years before the one I had. It named me as the sole beneficiary, but there was a codicil I'd never seen.

"If Elena remarries within five years of my death, all assets transfer to my sister Rachel," I read aloud, my voice shaking.

Judge Sterling nodded. "It's a trap, Elena. Rachel was planning to challenge your inheritance by claiming you were never truly married to her brother."

I dropped into a chair, the papers sliding from my hands. "But we were married for seven years. We have a child."

"She forged the DNA test to prove Mila wasn't his," the judge said. "If that had stuck, the marriage could be questioned. You'd be a widow with no legal standing."

I thought of Rachel's cruel smile, her confident stride. She had planned this for years. She had waited for my husband to die, then moved in like a vulture.

"But why?" I asked. "What did she want so badly?"

"The Whitmore estate isn't just money," the judge said, sliding another document toward me. "It's control of Whitmore Industries. Rachel was cut out of the board when your husband took over. This was her revenge."

I looked at the papers — stock certificates, board meeting minutes, a letter from Rachel's lawyer threatening to sue for fraud. It was worse than I'd imagined.

"She planned to discredit you, take the company, and leave you destitute," the judge said. "But you have something she doesn't."

"What?" I asked.

"The original will," she said, pointing to the chess king still sitting on the table. "And now, proof of her bribery."

I picked up the chess king, turning it over in my hands. My husband had known. He had hidden everything inside this tiny wooden figure, trusting me to find it.

"There's more," the judge said, pulling out a small voice recorder. "This was in the same box. It's a conversation between Rachel and her lawyer, discussing how to 'eliminate' the child's claim."

I pressed play, and Rachel's voice filled the room: "If the girl disappears, there's no heir at all. Make it look like an accident."

My blood ran cold. "She planned to hurt Mila?"

The judge's face was stone. "She did plan it. But she never got the chance. Now she will face criminal charges for conspiracy, fraud, and attempted kidnapping."

I sank back, my mind reeling. The woman I'd called family for a decade had wanted my daughter dead. And I had walked into her trap without a clue.

"What do I do now?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

The judge looked at me with something like admiration. "You fight, Elena. You fight with everything you have."
