Instead of thanking the shivering young man, Richard glared at Tyler.

"Get your hands off her!"

he snapped, waving his security guards forward.

"What did you do to her? Why is she out here in this condition? Did you steal her away from the care facility?"

Margaret grabbed her son's arm with surprising strength.

"No, Richard, stop! You have it all wrong!"

she cried, her voice cracking.

"I got confused and wandered off. I would have frozen to death if this sweet boy hadn't found me. He gave me his only coat and kept me warm!"

Richard paused, looking from his mother's earnest face to Tyler, who was now curled into a ball on the frozen dirt, his lips turning blue. Despite his mother's words, Richard's suspicion lingered.

"We're leaving. Now,"

he ordered his men, helping Margaret to her feet. As they lifted her, one of the guards roughly pushed Tyler's backpack aside to clear the path. The worn canvas bag tore open, spilling Tyler’s few worldly possessions onto the snow.

Among the plastic cups and spare socks, a small, tattered leather wallet fell open. A laminated, faded photograph slid out, landing face-up in the snow right at Richard's feet. Richard glanced down, intending to ignore it, but the face in the photograph stopped him dead in his tracks. It was a picture of a young, laughing woman with bright blue eyes and a distinctive silver heart necklace—a necklace Richard knew all too well.

Richard’s breath hitched. He slowly knelt back down, picking up the wet photograph with trembling fingers.
