A Homeless Boy Grabbed My Arm and Showed Me a Pin I Thought Was Unique
Previously: When a young boy stopped Vanessa on a cold night, she almost walked away. But the gold pin in his hand changed everything, leading her to a secret her family hid for years.
The Secrets in Room 214
Vanessa fell to her knees on the cold pavement, completely ignoring the dirt staining her expensive coat. She gripped the boy’s shoulders gently, her eyes searching his face. "What is your name?" she asked, her voice trembling. "And where did you get this pin?"
"My name is Caleb," the boy sniffled, wiping his nose with his sleeve. "My mommy gave it to me. She told me that if she ever fell asleep and wouldn't wake up, I had to run outside and find the lady with the matching pin. She said you would save us."
A wave of adrenaline crashed through Vanessa. Clara was alive. For seven years, her family had mourned, believing the worst. Now, this child was standing before her, holding the ultimate proof. "Where is she, Caleb? Take me to her right now," Vanessa urged, rising to her feet and taking his small, cold hand in hers.
Caleb led her away from the upscale neighborhood, guiding her down dark, unfamiliar streets and into a gritty, industrial district. Vanessa’s mind raced with questions, but she pushed her fear aside. Finally, they stopped in front of a dilapidated, two-story motel with a buzzing, semi-broken neon sign. They climbed the rusted metal stairs to the second floor, where Caleb pushed open the door to Room 214.
The room was small and smelled of damp carpet and cheap medicine. On a sagging bed in the corner lay a woman. She was incredibly thin, her skin pale and translucent, but Vanessa recognized her instantly. It was Clara. Vanessa rushed to the bedside, tears streaming down her face as she took her sister’s frail hand. "Clara! Oh my god, Clara, I've been looking for you for so long!"
Clara’s eyes slowly fluttered open. A weak, tearful smile crossed her face. "Vanessa... you found him," she whispered. But almost immediately, panic gripped Clara's features. She used all her remaining strength to pull Vanessa close. "You have to take Caleb and run, Vanessa. He found us. He's coming here tonight."
Before Vanessa could ask who was chasing them, heavy footsteps echoed on the metal walkway outside. A shadow fell across the frosted glass window, and the doorknob began to slowly turn.
