Previously: When a wealthy, wheelchair-bound businessman is approached by a tattered young boy in a luxury restaurant, a skeptical million-dollar bet leads to an unbelievable medical miracle.

The Cost of a Miracle

Edward gripped the armrests of his wheelchair, his knuckles turning white as the warmth in his legs intensified into a vibrant, tingling energy. Slowly, almost automatically, his feet pressed against the marble floor. With a trembling gasp, Edward did the impossible: he stood up. The entire restaurant fell into a stunned silence. Patrons gasped, and a waiter dropped a tray of champagne glasses, sending crystal shattering across the floor.

Edward took one step, then another. The paralysis that had plagued him for years was entirely gone. He felt light, powerful, and completely reborn. Tears of disbelief welled in his eyes as he looked down at his moving limbs. But his euphoria was short-lived. As he reached out to thank the boy, Noah suddenly collapsed onto the floor, his face turning a deathly shade of pale.

Before Edward could react, a woman in a tailored but worn suit pushed through the crowd, screaming Noah's name. She fell to her knees beside the unconscious boy, cradling his head in her arms. She looked up at Edward, her eyes burning with a mixture of terror and fierce anger.

"What did you do?" Edward asked, his voice shaking. "Who are you?"
"I am his mother, Clara," she sobbed, holding the boy tightly. "He has a rare condition, a gift that is also a curse. Every time he heals someone, he absorbs their physical trauma. His body can't take this, especially not something as severe as spinal paralysis! You wanted your legs back, but you just signed his death warrant!"

Edward's heart sank into his chest. The joy of his miracle instantly dissolved into a sickening weight of guilt. He had made an arrogant, cynical bet, and now an innocent child was dying because of it. Clara tried to lift Noah, but she was too weak. Edward, now fully mobile, knelt down and gently scooped the boy into his arms. The million dollars he had promised didn't matter anymore; he had to save the boy who had sacrificed everything for a stranger.
