The Only Warmth Left

The bitter winter wind howled beneath the concrete overpass of the bustling city, carrying a relentless flurry of snow. For eighteen-year-old Jake, the cold was a constant, agonizing companion. Having lived on the streets for the past year after losing his family, he had learned to survive on the bare minimum. His makeshift shelter—a fragile construction of blue tarp and damp cardboard boxes—offered little protection against the sub-zero temperatures. Yet, Jake wasn't thinking about himself. His attention was entirely focused on the frail, elderly woman shivering beside him.

Her name was Eleanor. She was eighty-one years old, with thin silver hair and eyes that seemed lost in a fog of confusion. Jake had found her wandering aimlessly in the snow hours earlier, wearing nothing but a thin nightgown and a light sweater. Without hesitation, he had pulled her into his shelter and wrapped his only thick winter coat around her shoulders, leaving himself in nothing but a threadbare hoodie.

"Why would you give me your only coat, sweetheart?" Eleanor asked, her voice trembling as she looked at him with gentle, confused eyes.

Jake forced a reassuring smile, his own teeth chattering. "Because you're freezing and you need it more than I do," he replied softly, rubbing her hands to restore some circulation. He knew the dangers of hypothermia, and he was terrified for her.

Suddenly, the crunch of heavy boots in the snow shattered the silence. A group of men in dark, expensive coats approached the shelter. Leading them was Andrew, a bearded man in his late forties whose face was etched with sheer panic. The moment his eyes fell upon Eleanor, he rushed forward, dropping to his knees on the frozen ground.

"Mom! Thank God, are you alright?" Andrew cried, placing a trembling hand on her shoulder.

Jake, shivering violently, pleaded, "Please, she's been so cold. Get her somewhere warm." Andrew looked up, his eyes locking onto the freezing teenager who had sacrificed everything to keep his mother alive.
