Previously: When a tattered young man interrupted a high-society banquet, the guests laughed at his poverty. But a tiny silver ring rolling across the tablecloth changed everything.

A Ghost from the Past

For a long, agonizing moment, the only sound in the banquet hall was the soft crackle of the fireplace. Robert stared at the silver ring as if it were a ghost. It wasn't an expensive piece of jewelry—just a simple, hand-engraved band with a tiny, faded sapphire. But Robert recognized it instantly. He had bought that exact ring twenty-one years ago in a small college town, long before he had acquired his millions, and long before he had married Victoria.

"Robert, darling? What is it?" Victoria asked, her playful demeanor instantly vanishing. She looked between her husband’s pale face and the dirty boy standing at the edge of the dining room. "Do you know this... this vagrant?"

Robert didn't answer her. He slowly stood up, his expensive tailored black suit suddenly feeling suffocating. He picked up the silver ring with trembling fingers, turning it over to read the faint inscription inside: Always, R.S.

"Where did you get this?" Robert's voice was barely a whisper, but it carried an immense weight that commanded the room's absolute silence.

Oliver wiped a tear from his cheek, standing tall despite his tattered clothes. "It belonged to my mother, Clara," he said softly. "She passed away in a shelter three weeks ago. Before she died, she gave me this ring and told me to find Robert Sterling. She said you were the only family I had left."

A collective gasp rippled through the guests. Victoria’s eyes widened in horror and fury. She turned to Robert, her voice rising. "Clara? Who is Clara, Robert? And what is this boy talking about?"

Robert felt the room spinning. Clara had been the love of his life before his family forced him to abandon her for a marriage of convenience and wealth. He had never known she was pregnant. He looked at Oliver, seeing the familiar shape of his own jawline and the deep blue of his own eyes reflected in the boy's face.
