A Homeless Boy Stopped Me on the Street, Holding My Dead Sister's Secret Pin
Previously: When a young boy grabbed Emily on a busy street, she almost ran away. But when he showed her a rare family heirloom, she realized her missing sister was closer than she ever imagined.
A Dark Secret Unveiled
Emily knelt on the cold concrete, her knees aching, but she didn’t care. She grabbed the boy's shoulders, her eyes searching his dirty face.
"What is your name? Where did you get this?"she asked, her voice cracking with a mixture of hope and terror.
The boy sniffled, wiping his nose with his sleeve.
"I'm Toby. My mom is really sick. She gave me this pin today and told me to stand on this street. She said if I saw a woman wearing the same one, I had to show it to her. She said it was our only hope."
Without a second thought, Emily gripped Toby’s hand.
"Take me to her,"she commanded. Toby led her away from the brightly lit avenue, down winding side streets and into a gritty neighborhood she usually avoided. They finally stopped in front of a dilapidated municipal shelter. The air inside was thick with the scent of dampness and collective despair.
Toby guided her to a quiet corner where a frail woman lay huddled beneath a thin blanket. As the woman turned her head, Emily’s heart stopped. Despite the hollow cheeks and the graying hair, the green eyes were unmistakable. It was Clara.
"Clara?"Emily cried, falling to her knees and throwing her arms around her sister. Clara gasped, weeping weakly as she hugged Emily back. But as the initial shock subsided, Emily pulled away, her eyes filling with painful questions.
"Why did you leave us? Why did you let us think you were dead?"
Clara closed her eyes as tears streamed down her face.
"I didn't run away, Emily,"she whispered hoarsely.
"Ten years ago, Uncle Richard found out I knew he was embezzling our trust fund. He threatened to ruin your life and cut off your university funding if I didn't disappear. He told me you died in an accident years later so I would never try to contact you."
