A Homeless Boy Stopped Me on the Street Holding My Missing Sister's Pin
Previously: When a shivering eight-year-old boy stopped Rachel on a dark street, she expected a plea for change. Instead, he held out a rare heirloom belonging to her long-lost sister.
The Dark Alleyway
Rachel stood frozen on the damp cobblestones, the world spinning around her. The pin the boy held wasn't just similar; it was the exact twin to the one her mother had commissioned for her and Sarah before she passed. Only two existed in the entire world.
"What is your name?"Rachel asked, her voice trembling as she knelt to be at eye level with the child.
"Liam,"the boy whispered, wiping his nose with the sleeve of his green jacket.
"Where did you get this, Liam? Where is your mother?"
Liam pointed a shaking finger toward a narrow, unlit alleyway cutting between two historic brick buildings.
"She's sick. Really sick,"he whimpered.
"She told me that if she ever couldn't wake up, I had to take this pin and find the lady who wears the other one. She said the other leaf would save us."Rachel felt a chill run down her spine that had nothing to do with the autumn wind. Without a second thought, she grabbed Liamβs hand and let him lead her into the darkness.
They navigated a maze of trash cans and fire escapes until they reached a rusted iron door leading to a dilapidated basement storage room. The air inside was freezing and thick with moisture. In the corner, huddled on a pile of old blankets, lay a frail woman. Rachel rushed forward, pulling out her phone to use the flashlight. As the beam of light illuminated the woman's pale, sunken face, Rachel let out a choked sob. Despite the hollow cheeks and the tangled, matted hair, there was no mistaking those features. It was Sarah.
