Previously: When a young boy stopped Hannah on a cold night, she expected a plea for change. Instead, he held out a unique gold pin—one that belonged to her long-lost sister.

The Search in the Dark

Hannah knelt on the cold concrete, her knees knocking together as she grabbed the boy by his shoulders. The anger was entirely gone, replaced by a desperate, frantic hope that threatened to overwhelm her. She looked into his tear-filled eyes, searching for any trace of family resemblance.

"What is your name?" she asked, her voice trembling.
"Owen," the boy sniffled, wiping his nose with his sleeve.
"Owen, where did you get this? Where is your mother?" Hannah pressed, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Owen explained through his tears that his mother was terribly sick. She had given him the pin that morning, telling him to go to the city square and look for a woman wearing the exact same jewel. It was their last hope. She was too weak to leave her bed, and they had no money for food or medicine.

Though a voice in the back of Hannah's mind warned her that this could be a dangerous trap, her heart refused to listen. She had spent twelve agonizing years wondering if her sister was alive. She couldn't walk away now. Clinging to the hope of a miracle, she told Owen to lead the way.

They walked quickly, leaving the brightly lit square behind and heading toward the dilapidated dock district. The streets grew darker, the air colder, and the buildings more neglected. Finally, Owen stopped outside a crumbling brick tenement. He led her up a flight of creaking, dark stairs to a cramped room on the third floor.

The room was freezing and smelled of dampness. In the corner, on a thin mattress, lay a frail woman. As the door creaked open, she weakly turned her head. Hannah took a step forward, her breath catching as the dim light revealed the gaunt face of her long-lost sister, Sarah. But before they could speak, a heavy shadow blocked the doorway behind them.
