Previously: When a young boy in a dirty hoodie stopped Rachel on a cold city street, she expected a plea for change—not the exact gold pin her missing sister once owned.

The Dark Path to the Truth

Rachel’s mind raced as she stared at the weeping child. Eight years ago, her younger sister, Sarah, had vanished without a trace, taking her matching gold leaf pin with her. The police had eventually closed the case, leaving Rachel’s family devastated and broken. Now, this mysterious boy stood before her, holding the very key to her sister's disappearance. She knelt down on the cold pavement, ignoring the dirt, and gently took the boy by his shoulders.

“What is your name, sweetheart?” Rachel asked, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and hope.
“Luke,” the boy sniffled, wiping his nose with the sleeve of his oversized hoodie.
“And your mother... where is she, Luke? What is her name?” Rachel pressed, her heart hammering against her ribs.
“Her name is Sarah. She’s really sick, and we live in the old basement down the street. She told me to find the lady with the other leaf if anything bad happened to her,” Luke explained, tears streaming down his grimy cheeks.

Without hesitation, Rachel grabbed Luke’s hand. He led her away from the brightly lit walkway and down a series of increasingly dark, narrow alleyways. They stopped outside a dilapidated, abandoned apartment building. Luke pushed open a heavy metal door, leading Rachel down a flight of steep, pitch-black concrete stairs into a damp, freezing basement apartment.

Inside, the air was thick with mold. On a makeshift mattress in the corner, a frail, pale woman lay shivering under a threadbare blanket. Rachel rushed to her side, her eyes filling with tears as she recognized the delicate facial features of her long-lost sister. Sarah was barely conscious, her skin burning with a fever.

Before Rachel could call for help, a shadow loomed over them. A tall, rugged man with a hostile expression stepped out from the darkness of the adjoining corridor. He glared at Rachel with absolute malice.

“Who the hell are you, and what are you doing in my space?” the man growled, stepping forward aggressively. “Get out before I make you regret ever walking down here.”
