Arthur’s heart hammered against his ribs as he walked Maya home. He wanted to dismiss Sam’s words as the delusions of a troubled street kid, but the seed of doubt had been planted. Evelyn had always been the one to prepare Maya's meals, insisting that her special "organic diet" was the only thing keeping Maya’s strength up. Arthur had trusted her completely. That evening, while Evelyn was drawing a bath for Maya, Arthur secretly installed a small nanny camera disguised as a USB charger in the kitchen outlet, pointing directly at the food preparation counter. He barely slept that night, staring at the ceiling while his wife slept peacefully beside him.

The next morning, Arthur watched the live feed on his phone from his home office. Evelyn was preparing Maya’s favorite cinnamon oatmeal. Arthur’s breath hitched as he saw his wife pause, look around the empty kitchen, and pull a small, unlabeled brown dropper bottle from the very back of the spice cabinet. With practiced ease, she squeezed five drops of a clear liquid into the bowl, stirring it thoroughly before carrying it to Maya’s room.

An hour later, Evelyn left the house to run errands. Arthur knew this was his chance. He walked into Maya’s bedroom. His daughter was sitting on her bed, holding a doll. Arthur quietly picked up a colorful tennis ball from her toy basket. Without making a sound, he tossed it directly toward her face.

To his absolute shock, Maya’s hand instinctively flew up, catching the ball mid-air. Her eyes, previously dull and unfocused behind her sunglasses, widened in sheer terror as she realized what she had just done. She stared directly at her father, her eyes filled with tears.
