Previously: When ten-year-old Lily was caught stealing milk for her starving baby brother, a wealthy stranger stepped in with an offer that would uncover a long-lost family secret.

An Unexpected Journey

Lily stared at the stranger in disbelief, her small shoulders shaking. Charles stood up and turned to Arthur, pulling out a gold credit card. He didn't just pay for the milk; he instructed the stunned clerk to fill several large bags with fresh bread, fruit, warm meals, and boxes of baby formula. Arthur packed the bags quickly, his hands shaking slightly, grateful that he didn't have to call the police on a child.

With the heavy bags in his hands, Charles walked out into the rain beside Lily. She led him through a maze of dim, wet alleyways to a crumbling, abandoned apartment building on the edge of the city. Charles felt a pang of deep sorrow. No child should have to live like this, let alone care for an infant. They climbed the creaking stairs to a drafty room on the third floor. Inside, a tiny toddler lay crying softly in a makeshift crib made of old blankets.

While Lily rushed to prepare a bottle of warm milk, Charles looked around the barren room. His eyes caught a small, dusty wooden mantlepiece. There were no decorations, except for a single, framed photograph. Charles walked over and picked it up. As he wiped the dust away with his thumb, his breath caught in his throat. The woman in the photo had the same bright green eyes as Lily, smiling warmly beside a younger version of himself.

"Clara..." Charles whispered, his voice cracking. "This is my sister."
