Previously: When a dirty, tattered young man approached a paralyzed billionaire in a luxury penthouse, everyone laughed. But a simple touch and a sudden gasp changed their lives forever.

The Spark of Life

The entire restaurant fell into a dead, breathless silence. Eleanor’s mocking smile froze on her face as she watched Charles grip the armrests of his high-tech wheelchair so tightly his knuckles turned white. His face, once pale and composed, flushed with a sudden rush of color.

"Three," Toby whispered, releasing his grip and standing up.

Before anyone could utter a word, Charles gasped loudly, drawing in a massive breath as if he had just broken the surface of deep water. He looked down at his right foot. Slowly, incredibly, his big toe wiggled. Then, his entire foot flexed. The robotic sensors on his wheelchair whirred in protest as the dormant muscles in Charles's legs suddenly fired with life.

With trembling hands, Charles pushed himself upward. For a decade, his legs had been nothing but dead weight. Now, they held. He stood upright, towering over the table, shaking but fully balanced. The crystal glass slipped from his fingers, shattering on the polished marble floor.

Up close, beneath the dirt and grime on the young man's face, Charles saw the piercing green eyes and the familiar structure of his jawline. A memory, long buried under layers of greed and corporate lies, flashed in Charles's mind.

"Those eyes..." Charles whispered, his voice trembling. "You're Matthew’s son. You're Toby Vance."

Toby stood tall, his tattered coat suddenly looking like a mantle of dignity. "I am," Toby said, his voice echoing in the quiet room. "And I didn't come here for your million dollars, Charles. I came to reclaim what you stole from my father."

Ten years ago, Charles had been a minor investor in a revolutionary bio-neural research lab run by Dr. Matthew Vance. Desperate for a miracle cure for his own degenerative spinal condition, Charles had stolen the only working prototype of Matthew's bio-frequency stimulator, framing the brilliant doctor for corporate espionage. Matthew died in ruin and disgrace, while Charles used the stolen tech to partially sustain himself—until the device failed, leaving him permanently paralyzed. Or so he thought.
