A Frozen Sanctuary

The bitter winter wind howled beneath the concrete highway overpass, carrying with it a relentless flurry of snow that blanketed the frozen American city. In this desolate, forgotten corner, seventeen-year-old Luke huddled inside his makeshift shelter. Constructed from nothing more than a frayed blue tarp and a few discarded cardboard boxes, it offered little protection against the sub-zero temperatures. Yet, Luke wasn't alone. Clutched tightly in his arms was Sarah, a seventy-nine-year-old woman who had wandered into his refuge hours earlier, shivering and deeply disoriented.

Luke had watched her stumble through the snow, wearing only a thin sweater. Without hesitation, he had pulled off his own heavy winter coat—his only shield against the freezing elements—and wrapped it securely around her frail shoulders. Now, as they huddled together for warmth, Sarah looked up at him with pale, watery eyes.

"Why would you give me your only coat, sweetheart?"

she whispered, her voice trembling violently. Luke tightened his grip, trying to block out the biting wind with his own body. He offered her a gentle, reassuring smile despite his chattering teeth.

"Because you're freezing and you need it more than I do,"

he replied softly. For Luke, there was no choice to make; he couldn't watch another human being suffer when he had the means to help, even if it meant risking his own life.

Suddenly, the blinding glare of flashlights pierced the darkness. A group of men in dark coats rushed toward the overpass, their heavy boots crunching loudly on the frozen ground. Leading the pack was James, a man in his mid-forties wearing glasses, his face etched with sheer panic. Spotting the blue tarp, James dashed forward and fell to his knees beside Sarah. He placed a trembling hand on her shoulder, tears welling in his eyes.

"Mom. Thank God, are you alright?"

James cried out, his voice cracking with emotion. Luke, shivering uncontrollably, pleaded with the frantic son,

"Please, she's been so cold. Get her somewhere warm."
