Previously: When little Chloe offered her lunch to a shivering homeless woman on a snowy bench, she had no idea she was handing it to the mother she lost years ago.

A Ghost From the Past

Before Clara could process the little girl's extraordinary words, David stepped forward from the shadows, his boots crunching quickly on the icy sidewalk. He looked embarrassed, assuming his daughter had overstepped or made the homeless woman uncomfortable.

"Chloe, sweetheart, we shouldn't bother the lady," David said gently, reaching out to take his daughter's hand.

But as David knelt down to Chloe's level, his eyes finally met Clara’s. The polite smile died on his lips. His entire body went rigid, and the color drained completely from his face. He stared at her, his chest heaving as if he had just seen a ghost. "Clara?" he whispered, his voice trembling so violently it was barely audible over the winter wind.

Clara pulled her oversized sweater tighter around herself, suddenly feeling defensive and exposed. "Do I... do I know you?" she stammered. She had survived a terrible accident five years ago, waking up in a hospital with no identification, no memory of her past, and only a recurring dream of a warm home and a baby's cry. She had spent years wandering the shelters, trying to piece her identity back together.

David took a step closer, falling to his knees in the cold snow right in front of the bench. Tears welled in his eyes and spilled down his cheeks.

"Clara, it's me. It's David," he choked out. "And this is Chloe. Your daughter."

The words struck Clara like a physical blow. A sudden, violent rush of memories flooded her mind—a wedding ring, a nursery painted pale yellow, and the agonizing night of a stormy car crash where she had been thrown from the vehicle and swept away by a rising river. She had been declared dead after months of searching. But she was alive, and her family was standing right in front of her.
