An Uninvited Guest

The sun shone brilliantly over the manicured lawns of Belmont Manor, reflecting off the polished silver and the champagne flutes of three hundred high-society guests. Henry Belmont stood on the grand stone steps, adjusting his navy blue tuxedo. Beside him, Victoria was a vision of perfection in her classic A-line lace gown, her dark hair pinned back with diamonds. Everything was flawless, a testament to the Belmont family's immense wealth and prestige.

But the perfect facade shattered when a woman began climbing the steps, pushing past the security barriers. She was gaunt and trembling, her messy grey hair escaping from a dirty knitted shawl. Her face was smudged with soot, and her clothes reeked of neglect. The guests gasped, pulling away in disgust as she approached the altar.

Henry stepped forward to shield Victoria, his face hardening. "You can't be here," he whispered, trying to keep his voice calm but firm. He didn't want a scene to ruin his bride's perfect day.

The woman stopped, looking up at him with a gaze so desperate and intense it made his heart skip a beat. She didn't look angry; she looked like a mother staring at a ghost.

"That's okay. Just check your phone,"
she whispered, her voice cracking with emotion.

Confused, Henry pulled his phone from his pocket. A message from an unknown number sat on the screen. He opened it, and Victoria leaned in to look. The image showed a young, bruised woman in a hospital bed holding a newborn, while Henry's adoptive father, Arthur, stood over her with a menacing smile, holding a briefcase of cash.

Henry's breath hitched. "This photo..." he murmured, his world tilting. He looked up at the stranger, whose amber-green eyes perfectly matched his own.

The woman wept openly.

"I told you I'd find you,"
she said. Victoria, trembling, clutched her bouquet.
"Who is she?"
she demanded.

"Who is she?" she demanded.
