Previously: When Lauren witnessed her stepfather Charles attacking her beloved grandmother Eleanor, she intervened with a desperate strike. But the violent outburst was only the cover-up of a much deeper betrayal.

Unmasking the Predator

Lauren stood defensively over Eleanor, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Don't you dare touch her again," she warned, her voice shaking but resolute. Charles slowly pushed himself up, coughing and clutching his bruised ribs. He spat on the floor, his eyes darting toward the stairs. "You don't know what you're doing, Lauren," he hissed, his voice laced with a desperate kind of panic. "She's crazy. She's ruining this family."

But Lauren knew her grandmother was far from crazy. Eleanor was the anchor of their lives, especially after Lauren’s mother, Sarah, had fallen ill a year ago. Lauren helped Eleanor sit up, noticing a crumpled piece of paper clutched tightly in the elderly woman's trembling hand. It was a legal document, smudged with dirt and sweat. "What is that, Grandma?" Lauren whispered, gently taking the paper.

"He tried to make me sign it, Lauren," Eleanor sobbed, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks. "He wanted to sell the house. My house. He said if I didn't sign, he would put me in an asylum."

Lauren smoothed out the document and gasped. It was a forged power of attorney, granting Charles full control over Eleanor’s estate and bank accounts. For months, Lauren had noticed their savings dwindling, but Charles had always blamed the rising cost of Sarah’s medical treatments. Now, the sickening truth was laid bare. Charles hadn't been paying the medical bills; he had been gambling the money away, and now he was trying to steal Eleanor’s only remaining asset—the family home.

Just then, the front door clicked open. Sarah, pale and weary from her dialysis treatment, walked into the foyer. She stopped dead in her tracks, looking at the bruised Charles, the weeping Eleanor, and the damning legal document in Lauren's hands. "What on earth is going on here?" Sarah asked, her voice trembling.
