Previously: When Clara served a shivering biker a warm cup of tea against her coworker's wishes, she had no idea this small act of kindness would return to save her life years later.

A Debt of the Soul

Jack smiled, a gentle expression that softened his rugged features. "I am," he said, removing his helmet. "My name is Jack Vance. I've spent the last three years looking for you, Clara." Clara was stunned, holding her rake like a shield. She couldn't understand why a man she had served a single cup of tea to years ago would track her down to her suburban home.

But as they sat on her porch swing, the warm autumn breeze rustling the trees, Jack began to paint a very different picture of that stormy night. "That night, I had lost everything," Jack confessed, his voice dropping to a whisper.

"My business had collapsed, my wife had recently passed away, and I was riding into the storm with no intention of coming back. I was going to end it all, Clara."

Clara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. She had no idea the quiet man in her booth had been standing on the precipice of life and death.

"But then you brought me that tea,"
Jack continued, a tear glistening in his eye.
"You didn't see a dirty, dangerous biker. You saw a human being. Your kindness was the first warm thing I had felt in months. It gave me the strength to turn my bike around, face my demons, and rebuild my life."

Clara was deeply moved, but a shadow of sadness crossed her own face. While Jack had rebuilt his life, hers was falling apart. Just that morning, she had received a final foreclosure notice. The bank was taking her home, and she had nowhere left to go. Thomas had recently bought out the old diner and fired her to save on costs, leaving her destitute. "I am so glad you made it, Jack," Clara said softly, trying to hide her tears. "But I'm afraid my own storm is just beginning."
