Previously: When Emily shared her final piece of flatbread with a group of hungry strangers, she had no idea that one of them held the key to her family's survival.

The Golden Card is Ripped Apart

The journey to the city took two grueling days of walking under a merciless sun, but the hope of a new beginning kept Emily and her companions moving. When they finally stood before the towering brick headquarters of George's manufacturing company, they felt a sense of relief they hadn't experienced in years. The grand glass doors and polished marble lobby seemed to promise a future free from hunger and fear. However, their hope was short-lived.

As they stepped toward the entrance, a burly security guard stepped into their path, his face twisted in a sneer. He took one look at Emily's patched apron and the dirty, worn clothes of her companions and immediately blocked the doorway.

"We don't allow beggars here,"
the guard barked, pushing one of Emily's friends backward.
"Move along before I call the police."

Emily quickly reached into her pocket and pulled out the gold-embossed business card George had given her.

"Please, look at this,"
she pleaded, holding it out with trembling hands.
"Mr. George told us to come. He promised us jobs and shelter."
The guard snatched the card, looking at it with skepticism. He let out a harsh laugh.
"You expect me to believe a man like George would give his personal card to trash like you? You probably stole this."
With a brutal twist of his hands, the guard ripped the card in half and tossed the pieces into the muddy gutter.

Tears welled in Emily's eyes as she watched their only hope disintegrate. Before she could protest, a cold, sharp voice cut through the air. George's business partner, Mr. Vance, walked out of the lobby. He looked at the group with utter disdain.

"What is the meaning of this disturbance?"
he demanded. The guard explained the situation, accusing Emily of theft. Vance sneered, refusing to listen to Emily's explanations.
"George is away on urgent business, and even if he weren't, we do not employ vagrants. Arrest them for trespassing and fraud,"
Vance ordered, as two more guards closed in on Emily.
