A Desperate Escape in the Cold

The bitter winter wind bit at Chloe’s cheeks, but the cold was the least of her worries. Standing outside the weathered brick office building, the nineteen-year-old clutched the straps of her backpack as if it were a shield. Beneath her cream-colored beanie, her mind raced with fear. She had spent the last twenty-four hours running from her manipulative stepfather, Richard, who was determined to force her to sign away her late mother’s estate.

Behind her, standing on the concrete steps of the law office, was Mr. Harrison, her mother's loyal attorney. He placed a reassuring hand near her shoulder, offering a warm smile.

You'll be fine. Breathe, kiddo,
he said softly. But Chloe’s breath hitched in her throat as a low, thunderous rumble began to vibrate through the snowy street.

From around the corner, a fleet of heavy motorcycles emerged, cutting through the frosty air. At the front of the pack rode a man who looked like he had been carved out of granite. It was Marcus, a rugged forty-one-year-old wearing a heavy leather jacket and dark sunglasses that masked his expression. He pulled his bike to a stop right in front of Chloe, the engine idling with a powerful hum.

Marcus pushed his sunglasses down slightly, his sharp eyes softening as he looked at the trembling girl.

Hey there. Looking for a ride?
he asked, his voice a calm, steady anchor in her storm.

Chloe looked at the imposing group of bikers behind him, then back at Marcus. For the first time in days, the crushing weight in her chest lifted. She took a deep breath.

I... guess I am,
she replied, stepping forward into an uncertain but hopeful future.
