An Awakening Into Nightmare

The sterile, blue-toned light of the hospital room felt cold against Rachel’s skin. She blinked through the haze of anesthesia, her eyes slowly focusing on the plastic bassinet beside her bed. Inside, her newborn twin girls slept soundly, their tiny chests rising and falling in perfect unison. They were a miracle, but Rachel could barely feel the joy. Every time she tried to move, a sharp, white-hot pain flared through her lower body. Her legs were completely encased in heavy plaster casts, suspended and useless.

Panic began to claw at her chest. Where was Mark? He was supposed to be holding her hand, celebrating the birth of their daughters. Instead, the room was empty of his presence, filled only with the rhythmic beep of the heart monitor and the smell of antiseptic. The door clicked open, and Rachel’s heart leaped with hope. But it wasn't her husband. It was her mother, Diane, wearing a heavy dark coat that seemed to carry the chill of the winter air inside.

As soon as Diane closed the door, Rachel broke down. "Mom, where is Mark? Why isn't he here? What’s happening to me?" she sobbed, her voice rising to a hysterical pitch. She covered her face with her trembling hands, her body shaking so violently that the hospital bed rattled. The fear was suffocating, a dark wave pulling her under.

Diane didn't rush to comfort her with soft words. Instead, she strode purposefully to the side of the bed, her expression grim and unyielding. She reached down, her hands cold and firm as she grabbed Rachel’s face, forcing her hands away. Rachel gasped, trying to pull back, but Diane’s grip was absolute.

"Stop it! Look at me!" Diane commanded, her voice sharp as glass.

Before Rachel could speak, Diane’s palm connected with her cheek in a sudden, stinging slap. The sharp crack echoed in the quiet room. Rachel gasped in utter shock, her panic freezing instantly as she stared at her mother with wide, tear-filled eyes.
