Previously: Waking up in a hospital bed with broken legs, Rachel learns her husband has fled with their savings. But when he returns to claim her newborn twins, her mother steps in.

The Depth of Betrayal

The burning sensation on Rachel’s cheek was nothing compared to the cold dread that settled in her stomach as Diane let go of her face. The silence between them was heavy, broken only by the soft cooing of the twins. Rachel stared at her mother, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps.

"I had to stop the panic, Rachel," Diane said, her voice softening slightly, though her eyes remained hard. "Because you need to be strong for what I am about to tell you. Your husband is gone, and he is not coming back for you."

Rachel shook her head in denial, tears streaming down her face. "No, that’s impossible. Mark was in the car with me. He was driving. He loves me, Mom! He loves our girls!"

Diane pulled a thick manila envelope from the pocket of her dark coat and laid it gently on Rachel’s lap, right above the plaster casts. "The police investigated the crash, Rachel. The brake lines were tampered with. Mark jumped from the vehicle before it hit the guardrail. He planned this."

Rachel’s world shattered. She stared at the envelope, too terrified to open it. "Why? Why would he do that to us?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.

"He didn't want you, but he wanted the babies," Diane explained, her voice trembling with anger. "He has been having an affair with your sister, Sarah, for over a year. While you were in emergency surgery, Mark emptied your joint accounts. Two hundred thousand dollars, gone."

Rachel gasped, clutching her chest. But the nightmare was far from over. Diane leaned closer, her eyes locking onto Rachel’s. "They are on their way here right now with a high-priced lawyer. They are going to claim your physical injuries and emotional trauma make you an unfit mother. They want to take your twins today, Rachel. And because you are trapped in this bed, they think you can't fight back."
