Previously: A brutal tornado rips through a luxury resort, trapping a wealthy motorist and a stoic caretaker. One man must choose between his life and the stranger's greed.

An Unthinkable Bargain

The storm's relentless assault intensified. Pillars groaned under the strain, threatening to buckle. Julian, his bespoke suit now a sodden mess clinging to his shivering frame, clawed his way back to the opening of the storm hatch. His eyes, darting wildly, landed on Noah, who was now bracing himself against the floor, his rugged body a bulwark against the tempest. In a desperate, almost primal display of his privileged world, Julian thrust a wad of damp hundred-dollar bills upward towards Noah.

“I’ll give you ten million dollars,” Julian’s voice cracked with hysteria, tears welling and tracing paths through the grime on his pale face. “Lock the latch and come down with us!”*

Noah looked at the money, then at Julian’s desperate face. The offer was ludicrous, a testament to a world so far removed from his own that it might as well have been on another planet. He didn't need Julian’s money; he needed Julian safe. But more than that, he needed to secure the hatch. The wind was trying to pry it open, the hinges groaning in protest. With a grim set to his jaw, Noah shook his head, his resolve hardening like the granite of the mountain itself. He could see the raw panic in Julian’s eyes, the sheer terror of a man accustomed to controlling every aspect of his life, now utterly powerless. The storm didn't care about Julian’s wealth or Noah's simple honesty. It cared only for destruction.

Suddenly, a violent gust ripped through the lobby. The two-hundred-pound forged iron hatch door bucked violently, the exterior latch bolt shearing off with a sharp, metallic crack. The opening was now unsecured, a gaping maw threatening to swallow the sanctuary whole. Noah knew, with chilling certainty, that someone had to hold it from the outside. The reinforced vault was safe, but the threshold was compromised. He glanced at Julian, still frozen halfway up the ladder, his face a mask of dawning horror. There was no time for negotiation, no time for appeals. There was only the storm, the hatch, and the terrible choice.
