The Stranger's Offer

James stood up and turned to George, who was watching the scene unfold with wide eyes. Without saying a word, James pulled out a hundred-dollar bill and slid it across the counter.

"Keep the change,"
James said.
"And help me load a basket with bread, fresh fruit, warm soup, and whatever else this young lady needs."

Clara watched in absolute silence as the two men quickly filled a large paper bag with groceries. She couldn't believe her eyes. Just moments ago, she had faced the prospect of going home empty-handed to her shivering brother, Leo. Now, she was holding a feast. But as James picked up the heavy bag, he looked down at her with a gentle smile.

"Where do you live, Clara? Let me walk you home. It’s not safe for a little girl to carry all of this alone,"
he offered.

Hesitant but driven by gratitude, Clara nodded and led the way. They walked through the chilly evening streets of the small American town, eventually turning into a dilapidated apartment complex on the edge of the city. The hallway smelled of dampness and neglect. Clara pushed open the unlocked door of apartment 3B, revealing a freezing, sparsely furnished room. On a mattress in the corner, a five-year-old boy named Leo lay huddled under a thin, threadbare blanket, coughing softly.

James felt a lump form in his throat. He immediately set the groceries down and knelt beside the boy, checking his forehead for a fever. But as he stood up to look for a glass of water, his eyes caught a small, dusty wooden frame sitting on the kitchen counter. It was the only photograph in the entire apartment. James walked over and picked it up. As he wiped the dust away with his thumb, his breath hitched, and his heart skipped a beat. The face staring back at him was incredibly familiar.
