As Connor lay groaning amidst the shattered plaster and broken wood of the living room wall, Major Brooks paid him no further attention. She immediately dropped to her knees beside her sobbing sister. 'I've got you, Hannah. You're going to be okay,' Vanessa whispered, her voice a soothing contrast to the rage she had just unleashed. She quickly dialed 911, demanding an ambulance for a woman in active labor.

Unable to resist her protective instincts, Vanessa snatched them up. What she discovered made her blood run cold. Connor had systematically emptied Hannah's savings accounts—money Hannah had inherited from their late mother to secure the baby's future. Over fifty thousand dollars had been transferred to an offshore gambling account over the last six months.

Connor had been forcing Hannah to work through a high-risk pregnancy not out of laziness, but out of sheer desperation to cover up his financial ruin. He had gambled away their lives, and when Hannah became too physically weak to work, his resentment turned into outright abuse.
