Christopher scrambled to his feet, adjusting his black suit, his eyes burning with indignation. "Who the hell are you?" he sneered, pointing an aggressive finger at the older man. "Get off my property before I have you arrested for trespassing!"
The older man didn't flinch. He kept one arm firmly around Hannah, helping her sit up against the tire of the SUV.
"My name is Joseph,"he said, his voice steady and deadly calm.
"And you are never going to lay a hand on my daughter again."
Hannahβs breath caught in her throat. Joseph. The father she had been told died in a tragic accident when she was a toddler. The father whose memory had been systematically erased by her mother. It couldn't be him, yet as she stared at his weathered face, she saw her own green eyes reflecting back at her.
Joseph looked down at her with infinite tenderness.
"I'm so sorry it took me this long to find you, Hannah. Your mother lied to protect her own secrets, but I never stopped searching."
Christopher laughed, a harsh, grating sound.
"This is pathetic. A homeless-looking ghost showing up to play hero? You have nothing. Now get out!"Christopher reached into his pocket, but Joseph stood up, towering over the younger man.
"I have everything I need, Christopher,"Joseph replied calmly, pulling a digital recorder and a thick folder of documents from his overcoat.
"I've been tracking your financial transactions for the last six months. I know about the offshore accounts, the forged signatures, and the dummy corporations. And more importantly, the FBI does too."
