Before Mark could process the sight of his daughter standing, the front door of the house flew open. Eleanor, Mark's ex-wife, rushed down the steps. Her face was a mask of panic, not joy. Instead of celebrating the apparent miracle of her daughter walking, Eleanor grabbed Lily by the shoulders, desperately trying to force her back down into the leather seat of the wheelchair.

"Get back down, Lily! It's a muscle spasm! She's going to hurt herself!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking with desperation. "Sarah did this! She's tortured my poor baby with ice water!"

But Lily resisted, crying softly. She looked at her father, her legs firm and steady on the concrete. Sarah stepped forward, pulling a thick manila folder from her bag. She handed it directly to Mark, whose hands were shaking so violently he could barely hold it.

"She isn't having a spasm, Mark. She has been walking this entire time," Sarah said, her voice steady despite the adrenaline. "Read the medical files. The real ones."

Eleanor lunged forward, trying to tear the folder from Mark's hands, but he blocked her with his arm, his eyes locked on the first page. Inside were bank statements showing massive monthly deposits from a trust fund set up by Mark’s late parents—money that was only accessible as long as Lily remained severely disabled. There were also forged medical reports, signed by a clinic owned by Eleanor's new boyfriend.

Mark looked up, his face pale, his eyes darting from the documents to his ex-wife. The pieces of the puzzle were finally falling into place. The constant demands for cash, the refusal to let other doctors examine Lily, the sudden "relapses" whenever Mark questioned the expenses. It was all a cold, calculated scam designed to drain his bank account and keep him tied to Eleanor forever.
