The echoes of Julian’s shout died down, leaving a suffocating silence in the grand hall. Gently but firmly, Julian unbuckled the twin carrier from his mother’s aching back and helped Martha to her feet. She was trembling, her knees bruised and damp from the soapy water. He guided her to a nearby armchair, kissing her forehead before turning back to face his wife.

Eleanor descended the stairs slowly, her heels clicking rhythmically against the wood she had just forced an elderly woman to clean. There was no remorse in her eyes, only a cold, calculated defiance.

"Don't look at me like that, Julian," Eleanor said, smoothing down her silk shirt. "We agreed she would contribute to this household if she was going to live under our roof. I am simply holding her to her word."

"Contribute?" Julian’s voice shook. "She is seventy years old! She watches our children all day while we are at work, and you have her scrubbing stairs with infants on her back? She is my mother, Eleanor, not your slave!"

Eleanor let out a bitter, mocking laugh.

"She is a burden, Julian. Ever since your father passed and she moved in, she has taken up space, resources, and your attention. I wanted to see how much she could handle before she finally admitted she doesn't belong here."

The cruelty of her words pierced Julian to the core. But the nightmare was only beginning. As Eleanor walked past him toward the kitchen, a folded document fell from her designer purse. Julian picked it up, his eyes scanning the bold letters at the top: Application for Involuntary State Guardianship and Assisted Care Placement. Eleanor had already prepared the paperwork to pack Martha away to a low-tier state-run facility, intending to use Martha's "inability to perform household duties" as proof of her mental and physical decline.
