Previously: When Natalie's husband handed her a "DIVORCE" folder in her hospital room, she thought it was just a playful joke. But moments later, his mother arrived with real papers and a cruel ultimatum.

A Cold Intrusion

The warmth of their shared laughter was instantly shattered when the heavy wooden door of the hospital room swung open. Eleanor, William’s mother, stepped inside. Behind her stood Mr. Vance, the family’s longtime estate attorney, clutching a sleek leather briefcase. Eleanor’s face was a mask of aristocratic disdain as she looked at Natalie.

"How touching," Eleanor sneered, her voice dripping with ice. "But I think it is time we put an end to these childish games and face reality."

William straightened up, immediately placing himself between his mother and Natalie's bed.

"Mother, what is the meaning of this? Why did you bring Vance here?"

Without answering, Eleanor gestured to the attorney, who opened his briefcase and placed a stack of official-looking documents on the bedside table. Unlike William's playful folder, these papers bore the formal seal of the state court.

"These are actual divorce papers, William," Eleanor said coldly. "And you are going to sign them today. I will not allow my family's legacy to be drained by a lost cause."

Natalie felt the blood drain from her face. Eleanor had always hated her, but this was a new level of cruelty. The specialized immunotherapy treatments keeping Natalie alive cost fifteen thousand dollars a month, a sum entirely funded by William's family trust.

"Are you insane?" William shouted, his fists clenching. "I love Natalie! I am not leaving her, especially not now!"

Eleanor smiled, a sharp, humorless curve of her lips.

"Then you can watch her die, William. Because if those papers are not signed by five o'clock, I will freeze the trust fund. You will be cut off completely. Let us see how long she survives without her medicine."

The ultimatum hung heavily in the air. William looked at the pen in his mother’s hand, then at Natalie, his eyes filled with absolute agony.
