Helena’s flawless facade began to crack, though she quickly tried to regain her composure. She let out a nervous, high-pitched laugh and reached for Christopher’s arm, but he coldly pulled away. The warmth that usually filled his eyes when he looked at his wife had vanished, replaced by a fierce, protective rage.

"Darling, don't be so dramatic," Helena pleaded, her voice trembling slightly. "Mia was just helping out. The staff is off today, and she wanted to show some appreciation for everything we do for her. It was entirely her idea."

Christopher looked down at his daughter. Mia’s shoulders shook as she sat on the cold marble, her eyes fixed on the floor, terrified to speak. Christopher knelt beside her, ignoring the dirt and water ruinous to his expensive suit. He gently took the scrubbing brush from her hand and threw it across the room, where it clattered loudly against the baseboard.

"Mia, look at me," Christopher whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "Tell me the truth. Right now."

Mia looked from her father to Helena, who was flashing her a subtle, threatening glare. But seeing her father’s unconditional love gave Mia the strength she had lost weeks ago. She stood up, wiping her tears with her wet apron.

"She threatened me, Dad," Mia sobbed. "She said if I didn't work as the house maid and sign over the trust fund Mom left for me, she would make sure your new business merger failed. She said she had the power to ruin you, and that you would hate me for destroying your dream."

Christopher felt a cold wave of shock wash over him. The trust fund left by his late wife was meant to secure Mia's future. He turned slowly to face Helena, whose face had drained of all color. The sweet, loving woman he thought he had married was gone, replaced by a calculating predator who had tortured his only child just to satisfy her greed.
