As Ethan lunged forward to grab the lamp, I didn't swing at him. Instead, I turned and threw the heavy brass base straight through the glass window behind me. The glass shattered with a deafening crash, showering the driveway below with glittering shards. Before Ethan could react, I screamed for help at the top of my lungs, hoping against hope that our distant neighbors might hear.

Ethan tackled me to the ground, his hands locking around my wrists. "Shut up!" he hissed, his composure finally breaking. But the shattered window had done its job. But I had hidden the leather-bound notebook inside my pajama pants before the confrontation. I pulled it out and handed it directly to the responding officer, along with the unswallowed pill I had retrieved from the bedsheets.

The investigation that followed was swift. The forensic lab confirmed the pill was a highly regulated sedative, and the detailed logs in Ethan's notebook matched the toxic substances found in my blood panel. My husband was arrested and charged with attempted murder and fraud.

Standing outside the courthouse months later, breathing the crisp, free air, I realized that the hardest cages to escape are the ones built out of love. True love never requires you to shrink yourself or live in the dark just to keep someone else warm.
