Previously: When Alice is suddenly cured of her paralysis by a mysterious young stranger at a gala, she uncovers a dark web of deceit spun by her own husband.

The Confrontation

Before Alice could process the revelation, her husband, Richard, pushed through the crowd. His face was a mask of sheer panic, devoid of any joy at his wife's miraculous recovery. He grabbed Alice's arm, his grip painfully tight.

"Get away from her!" Richard snarled, gesturing frantically to the security guards. "This man is a dangerous lunatic! Arrest him!"

Two guards tackled Henry to the ground, but he didn't struggle. Instead, he screamed over the noise of the crowd, his eyes locked on Alice.

"Don't drink the champagne, Alice! He's been drugging you! The silver pendant contains the micro-transmitter that neutralized the neural block he put in your spine!"

The ballroom fell into a stunned silence. Richard laughed nervously, wiping sweat from his brow.

"Don't listen to this garbage. Alice, sweetheart, you're experiencing a hysterical reaction. Sit back down before you hurt yourself."

But Alice felt the strength in her legs, solid and real. She looked at the glass of champagne Richard had left on her table, then down at the silver pendant Henry had managed to slip into her hand. She realized with sickening clarity that Clara, a brilliant biomedical engineer, had built a spinal stimulator to help her walk, but Richard had intercepted the technology, using a custom chemical compound to keep the stimulator deactivated.

Richard leaned in close, his voice dropping to a menacing whisper.

"If you don't sit back down in that chair right now and pretend this never happened, your little savior won't survive the night in police custody. Choose wisely, my dear."

Alice stood at a terrifying crossroads. Her sister's secret son, the boy who had just given her back her life, was at her husband's mercy. If she stayed standing, she risked his life. If she sat down, she would return to her gilded prison forever.
