The Storm Inside and Out

The cold autumn rain poured mercilessly over the quiet suburban neighborhood, but the storm inside the house at 42 Oak Lane was far more devastating. Clara, heavily pregnant and shivering in a wet cream-colored sundress, knelt on the slick concrete of the patio. Her hands clutched her baby bump as she looked up at her husband, Julian, with pleading, tear-filled eyes.

Julian stood tall in the warm, dry glow of the doorway, dressed in a crisp blue button-down shirt. Behind him stood Evelyn, a sleek brunette in a striking red cocktail dress, holding a glass of wine and wearing a smirk of cold triumph. Julian looked down at his wife of four years with nothing but disgust.

"Useless burden!"

Julian yelled, his voice cutting through the sound of the downpour. Before Clara could even gasp, Julian raised his foot and kicked her squarely in the shoulder, sending her sprawling onto the wet patio. Clara let out a sharp cry of pain and betrayal, weeping into the puddles.

But Julian’s cruel triumph was short-lived. From the shadows of the driveway, a figure in an OCP camouflage uniform charged forward. It was Sergeant Samantha Miller, Clara’s older sister, who had just returned from an overseas deployment to surprise her family. Seeing her pregnant sister assaulted, Samantha didn't hesitate. With a roar of fury, she lunged forward and delivered a powerful, bone-shattering punch directly to Julian’s jaw.

The force of the blow sent Julian stumbling backward, crashing into Evelyn. Both of them tumbled onto the polished hardwood floor of the entryway in a heap of limbs and spilled red wine. Samantha stood tall in the pouring rain, her boots planted firmly, looking down at them with absolute resolve.
