Previously: When William brutally kicked an elderly woman outside his wife's hospital room, he thought he was protecting his family. Instead, he exposed a dark truth that ruined his marriage forever.

The Mark of a Mother

The hospital security team rushed to the scene, separating William from the weeping elderly woman. William brushed off his navy blazer, immediately assuming the role of a protective husband. "She's a trespasser! She was trying to get into my wife's room!" he yelled at the guards, demanding they throw her out. But Laura, watching from behind the glass, could not shake the agonizing image of the old woman's eyes. There was no malice in them—only a deep, desperate sorrow.

When William returned to the room, his face was pale, and he tried to soothe his trembling wife.

"Don't worry, darling. I handled that crazy street woman. She won't bother us or our baby again,"
he whispered, trying to take the child from Laura's arms. But Laura pulled back, her mind racing. She had noticed something before Alice was wheeled away by a nurse. When Alice fell, her silk headscarf had slipped, revealing a highly distinctive, star-shaped birthmark on the side of her neck. It was the exact same rare birthmark that Laura carried, and the very same one she had just discovered on her newborn daughter's shoulder.

Laura's heart hammered against her ribs. She knew she was adopted, but her adoptive parents had always claimed her biological mother had passed away in a tragic accident decades ago. William had helped her search for her medical history years prior, eventually claiming there were no surviving records. Now, suspicion poisoned her mind. Why was William so desperate to keep this specific woman away?

Waiting until William left the pavilion to sign the discharge papers, Laura wrapped her baby in a warm blanket and slipped out of the room. Disregarding her physical pain, she navigated the quiet corridors down to the emergency wing, determined to find the woman with the scattered apples.
