The Whispers in the Dark

The house was quiet, the kind of heavy, suffocating silence that only settles in the deepest hours of the night. Jessica crept down the hallway, her bare feet pressing against the cold hardwood floor. She had woken up to an empty bed, the space beside her cold and undisturbed. A faint sliver of warm, brass-colored light spilled from the guest bedroom at the end of the corridor. Jessica’s heart hammered against her ribs as she approached, a cold dread pooling in her stomach.

Peering through the cracked double doors, she saw her husband, David, sitting on the edge of the mattress. His head was buried in his hands, his lightly bearded face tense with an unbearable weight. Standing beside him was his elderly mother, Ruth, her hand resting gently on his trembling shoulder. Jessica clutched her chest, her chestnut hair falling in a loose braid over her shoulder. She wanted to step forward, to ask what was wrong, but the raw anguish on David’s face stopped her cold.

"I can't do this anymore, mom," David choked out, his voice cracking under some invisible burden. "I don't know how long I can keep pretending."

The words pierced Jessica’s heart like a physical blow. A single, hot tear escaped her eye, tracing a slow path down her pale cheek. What was he pretending? Had their entire marriage been a lie? Did he not love her anymore?

"Lower your voice," Ruth whispered urgently, her eyes darting toward the door as if sensing Jessica's presence. "You'll wake her."

But David only shook his head, his profile hard and desperate under the warm glow of the lamp.

"Maybe it's time she wakes up," David replied, his voice laced with a bitter, tragic finality.

Jessica stood frozen in the dark hallway, her world fracturing into a thousand pieces. She pressed her hand against her mouth to muffle a sob, the lingering tension in the air suffocating her.
